09/25 IMSTA FESTA at SAE in NYC. Had a great time yesterday at IMSTA. Here are some pics. Among the highlights of my day there were getting to see Clyde Stubblefield play his breaks live on drums in the midst of an interview/panel with Marley Marl. Marley explained to Clyde what it was like sampling his records, etc. Really cool stuff. Both DoItAll and Mr. Funkee were also in the house from Lords of the Underground and kicked “Here Come the Lords” over Clyde’s live playing. DoItAll shared a story about James Brown calling him about not wanting to clear the sample.
Clyde confirmed that James Brown did fine his players for missing notes on stage, also called Brown’s managers a “bunch of assholes” and said he wouldn’t say something like that unless it was true. Clyde is one of the realest people in music. If you ever get a chance to see him speak or play, take it.
Also got to see IK Multimedia’s demos of Amplitube and T-Racks, which were put on by my cousin up from Florida. During that Ken Lewis, a grammy winning Engineer, showed some mastering/mixing tricks that were invaluable.
In addition to that I finally got the chance to talk to someone from Sound Exchange, they were great and explained everything fully. I probably asked about 10 questions in a row from the history of the company, to their lawsuits, to what they do on a daily basis to how you get down and the rep answered them all. Very satisfying.
Got to chill with Willie Green and Conscious, who were in the house and met some other people. Place was full of star producers and engineers including DJ Evil Dee, Hank Shocklee and others.
