FRESH OUT THE LABS: Bombs Not Rations (Nasa Remix - feat ADAM) by DCK VNNGT.  Nasa Produced this track, Mixed it and Mastered it at Nasa Labs.  Also jumped on it as ADAM too.  Check out more from DCK VNNGT on December 10th when they drop MRDR DTH KLL on Uncommon Records.

Recently got a great chance to listen to some of my recent work at MSR Studios in NYC.  I stopped by since a friend of mine works there and we met up to head out someplace that night.  I believe I was shown “Studio C” where some of the high rollers that want to be someplace private go for sessions.  Some high profile folks had been there recently, but I won’t be that dude to name drop.  The studio itself sort of isn’t done justice by my pic here.  I love how the glass into the live room is so low and close to the floor.  It kind of makes the engineer be in a position where their in the live room too in a sense instead of look down or across at it.  The ceilings in the live room are super high too in what is a pretty cozy space.
The point of bringing it up is how helpful it was to monitor there.  A lot of people coming up in hip-hop say things like “monitor your music on the shittiest system, because if it sounds good, it will sound good anywhere”.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  This is why I mix and master on what I am most comfortable with that I think actually sounds good.
When you listen to your music through a set up like they have at MSR, my theory is only backed up.  As an engineer, I still feel great when my work sounds incredible through high quality systems in well built rooms.  Whether that’s a studio, a venue or even a great car stereo, you better hold up when quality equipment calls.  I was reminded of this lately there.
I played stuff from Adam Warlock’s “Dark Weapons” and Gajah’s “Man the Ship” (2 recent projects to come through the lab) and both sounded really great to me.  They responded great to the huge bass bottoms they had installed.  Then I played something that was released by a large indie label that I knew I didn’t like the sound of, just to get a reference and to confirm some of my own listening sources.  Yep, sounded like shit there.  That’s the bottom line.
A good lesson, that you can never learn enough.  Mix and Master to the highest quality possible, let the people listening on a transistor radio from 1995 figure it out.

"Knocked out some mixes for Adam Warlock and Nic Mercer today. Productive Thursday for sure."

01/03/11 - Some Mixes Completed Last Week

Finished mixing down the “Master Peace” Remix that I did for the upcoming “Toxicology Music EP” last week.  That project is new from Short Fuze & Nasa, who dropped “Lobotomy Music” last year on Uncommon Records, mixed & mastered here at Nasa Labs.  Also finished the mix down on “Slugging Percentage” from Adam Warlock’s upcoming “Dark Weapons (from Mars)” EP.  Look for me to wrap up both of those projects within the next month or so.  Other projects will be in and out of the studio as well.  Hit me up at uncom37@yahoo.com to talk low rates.

    12/10 Mixing “Chain Lockin’”

Proud to say I’m mixing down the first of a few tracks for Adam Warlock’s “Dark Weapons” EP.  Throwing all the stops at “Chain Lockin’” here.  CLA effects on vocals, panned & SansAmped Ad lib track, some various stereo wideners on the main beat elements.  This EP will be very loud and very heavy.  Look for it Q1 in 2011.

Also, should note this project, if I haven’t already.  It’s a free album put out by Uncommon Records and Soapbox Clothing called “No Dough, No Show”.  It was mastered here at Nasa Labs.  I’m really excited about the mastering and the way it came out.  The tracks were submitted from various producers with very different mixing techniques and I think I was able to bring it all together for a consistent sound.  It’s never easy to master a compilation when the music doesn’t all come from the same source, but I tried to be true to each producer/mixers approach while bringing it all under one tent.  Really that’s my approach to all mastering, but you really have to go that way on compilations.  It’s a free project, so please click on the image to go and support it.

    08/31 Mixing - Adam Warlock

Mixing down a new Adam Warlock track produced by Skribe1. It’s called “The Future”. Mix is going really well. This is a banger. It’s going to be on the upcoming Uncommon Records/Soapbox Clothing Compilation and will end up on “The Land of the Way It Is” from Warlock in 2011.

    08/19 Mixing “Uncommon PSA”

Mixing down this track that’s going toward a project being put together by Subtitle of Briefcase Rockers.  It’s called “Uncommon PSA” by Adam Warlock aka Nasa.  It breaks down some of the history of how Uncommon Records began, it’s struggles and triumphs.

08/13 Mastering, More Mastering and More

Wow, don’t think because I haven’t posted on here that the studio hasn’t been busy.  It has.  I just have to do a better job on these updates.  Last week I mastered another great remix by the SuperHumanoids.  Tomorrow morning, I’ll be mastering a track by Atari Blitzkrieg.  In the meantime I’ve recorded an Adam Warlock track for an upcoming Briefcase Rockers release and Adam’s portion of a collab for his upcoming LP.

Whew.  More to come.  Get at me to get your work running through Nasa Labs.  Mixing, Mastering, Production, etc.  uncom37@yahoo.com.  I’m cheap and I don’t bite.  Hit me.

Adam Warlock’s verse for this track was recorded at Nasa Labs.  Check out this track that’s worthy of your ears.  FUCK BP (Leak or no Leak)

    05/29 Today In Nasa Labs

Today I started the mastering for a project from Alpha MC for the B.E.A.R./Briefcase Rockers imprint.  I’ll probably be working on this over the next few days.  Yesterday I was able to finish mixdowns on the “Intergalactic Rap Attack (Nasa Remix)” from Atari Blitzkrieg feat. C-Rayz Walz and “Warlock Junkie” from Adam Warlock that will be on Eleven’s “Chapter 1” compilation.
